Boarding Life

Chalo Trust School is a Christian Boarding School offering state of the art boarding facilities for both secondary and primary students. We provide high quality accommodation to our students which is unrivaled in Zambia. Boarding students live in dormitories with two to four students per dorm for the smaller dorm rooms and four to six students for the bigger, spacious rooms. Each Hostel is complete with its own well maintained shower and ablution area, common room and study area. Three healthy and complete meals, created by chefs, are served to students each day, as well as snacks at various points of the day

Each hostel has a resident house parent who provides pastoral care, guidance and counselling, and basic medical care. The school does laundry for the pupils but only for their school uniforms and linen. Pupils are encouraged to do part of their own laundry, in order to encourage them to take responsibility. This indeed is the essence of boarding life, that our children must learn to do what they do not do at home where maids and servants do everything for them. Our dedicated and experienced houseparents care for the everyday life of boarding students and strive to create a safe and nurturing environment, and to provide students with everything they need to succeed academically and socially.

Providing boarding students with a safe and secure experience is our top priority. Boarding facilities are supervised by experienced,adult staff members who live in-residence and are available to support the social and emotional well-being of the students at any time of day. We have a security team in place to make sure students stay safe at all hours of the day. Students have access to a medical clinic with a registered nurse, school counselors, a school chaplain. Additionally, parents are always able to reach a member of our staff 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Life at Chalo Trust School can be a lot of fun. As one parent commented: 'my child doesn’t want to be anywhere else'. It truly is a home away from home.

Christian School

As a Christian school, CTS has a strong Christian culture and we acknowledge God as the creator and recognize the reality of sin and the need for redemption through the Lord Jesus Christ as necessary to salvation. In the light of this, we teach values, attitudes and skills that are God honoring. We conduct an inter-denominational Chapel every Sunday at which our own teachers and invited preachers speak. (Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 )

The school has a comprehensive spiritual program for the students. There is devotion every morning before school begins and after prep in the evening. Individual students as well as the houseparents share from the word of God to encourage Students to be aware of the expectations of God for their lives. Scripture Union is compulsory. Students meet every Tuesday and Thursday after school to share the word of God and also to learn Hymns and spiritual songs. These events helps to shape the lives of the students and help them to become spiritually strong.

We have an Inter-denominational Chapel every Sunday with the School Chaplain in attendance. The school also invites seasoned men and women of God to come through to share the word of God and their experiences with the students. As a results many students have left the school having been born again and those who were already born again have strengthened their belief in God the father and his Son Jesus Christ. Through the various programs we have, we encourage Children to discover their spiritual gifts and their talents and utilize them to the best of their abilities.

Within our Christian orientation there is a general attitude of inclusion and tolerance, as opposed to exclusion and conformance. Those of other religious faiths are welcome to our school and encouraged to speak. We believe that the teachings of Christ do not need insulation. They seek to reach out. It is through exposure to other beliefs that students learn the values that different religions have in common. Religious freedom is as important to religious education as intellectual freedom is to academic growth. At Chalo Schools we emphasize a fostering of the Christian faith; what the individual student chooses to believe is a private matter.

Prep

Prep time (or study time) is held from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, Sunday to Friday and is intended to provide the opportunity for homework to be done, additional background reading, revision, and study for tests and exams. On Saturday, Prep is held from 10:30 to 12:30. Prep is held in the dining hall and silence is required from all students. It is supervised by any of the houseparents with the prefects keeping watch over the other students in their absence.

Students are allowed to have remedial lessons with teachers or with tutors during Prep. Some teachers make themselves available to provide extra lessons or remedial work during prep time. Students are allowed to leave the dining hall and use one of the classes if they want to do remedial work, provided they have approval from the houseparent on duty

As students spend the majority of the year in school, we encourage them to bring items that will make their stay more comfortable. We typically have a list of basic requirements that boarders, both boys and girls should bring when they're coming to school.

We also have a few prohibited items, as we feel that these items tend to be a distraction for our students. Some of these prohibited items include :

• Cell Phones
• Money
• Laptops
• Video Games

If students bring in any of these items, they are encouraged to hand them over to the administration. In the case of money, the student is encouraged to put the money into a school tuckshop account as the school tuckshop stocks many of the necessities a student might have during their stay in Chalo.

Tuck-Shop

The school runs a Tuck shop that supplies pupils and the surrounding community with essentials. Pupils are not, however, allowed to keep pocket money on their person. Instead, parents are advised to deposit a sum of money stipulated by school authorities from time to time. Against this amount, pupils get provisions from the tuck-shop. In order to help them budget, only a limited amount is allowed per week and children who exhaust this allocation, are not allowed to buy for that particular week. The school also provides a snack at break.

School Clinic

The School has a well stocked clinic to provide primary health care to all our students and staff. The clinic is run by a registered nurse who is always on call and is always ready to provide health care to our students. As we have a small community, we only provide primary healthcare. So if students suffer from any major illnesses or require surgery on anything more complicated, we immediately call the parents to come in and pick up the students or in the case of emergencies, we provide a vehicle to transfer the pupil to the nearest hospital.
